Statement on State of the Province Address

30 June 2014

The African National Congress in the Northern Cape welcomes and firmly endorses the State Of The Province Address (SOPA) delivered by our leader in government Premier Sylvia Lucas past Thursday, 26 June 2014. The SOPA presented itself as an immediate testament of the overwhelming electoral support of 64,4 percent that the fifth administration led by the ANC has been entrusted with by the masses of the Northern Cape.

We applaud Premier Lucas, the recently chosen Cabinet and our technocrats for ensuring that the SOPA bears a reflection of the hopes and aspirations of the people. Through their votes our people called for; the creation of more jobs, decent work and sustainable livelihoods, enhancing of education, building an accessible and quality health care system, development of rural areas, ensuring land and agrarian reform as well as fighting crime and corruption.

The deliverables emanating from the Premier`s address includes among others key areas that are aligned to the National Development Plan and our economic growth path outlook. The Northern Cape is now well positioned to embrace the new economic dawn of catalyst sectors of wealth creation such as energy infrastructure, transport infrastructure, ICT and the basic needs of water and sanitation.

In spelling out the modern economy posture that we have adopted, the Premier has guaranteed us a growth trajectory aimed at thwarting the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. It is indeed only the ANC led government that can respond to the South African quest towards industrialization, economic growth and employment creation.

Northern Cape is unambiguously the lynchpin of renewable energy and is set to unveil a string of solar and wind renewable energy projects aimed at harnessing the green economy, creating jobs and cast energy security for the people of the province and South Africa. We also applaud efforts in "creating a structure to coordinate all investors and also to localise maximum manufacturing and assembly of structural and technological inputs."

We wish the Premier well and her collective in planning and implementing a wide range of other high impact economic projects such as Port Nolloth Harbour , Upington Cargo Hub, De Aar Warehouse, and the revitalization of the De Aar rail line into a freight corridor. The three spheres of government are geared towards making all this, a reality.

We trust that all hand shall be on the deck to achieve all this during this third decade of freedom. We await with enthusiasm the Budget Votes of the various Departments which shall serve to flag tangible deliverables and highlight what is set to be achieved and what was achieved. Therefore, we extend our unending gratitude to all diligent and loyal civil servants who shall be supporting Premier Sylvia Lucas and her collective.

The world`s eyes are on the Northern Cape in that this province more than ever before has been placed at the centre of international focus owing to scientific development through the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and ventures in renewable energies. All of these developments have created an opportunity for the rebranding of the Northern Cape hence we shall be guiding our political leadership at local government on how best to seek mileage and communicate these developments.

We also trust in the visionary leadership of the Premier and her firm commitment to engage Mining Houses in respect of the wellbeing of our masses. Working conditions at mines will change and the lives of those neighbouring the mines shall be transformed in ensuring we move South Africa forward.
